How Hydrogenated Oils Prevent Weight Loss by Segoia
Despite the heavy regulation of food that's sold today, there's still one very unhealthy chemical that seems to end up in almost everything you eat—hydrogenated oils. Hydrogenated oils have been linked to obesity in adults and children, heart problems and high cholesterol levels. High consumption of hydrogenated oils can also prevent weight loss or even cause weight gain.
What Is Hydrogenated Oil?
Hydrogenated oil and partially-hydrogenated oil contain trans-fats. Over the past few years, news reports have popped up telling consumers how dangerous trans-fats are, but hydrogenated oil continues to be put in almost every processed food on the market.
Hydrogenated oil is bad for you because it is artificial—it does not exist at all naturally. It's created when hydrogen is added to natural oils to extend their shelf life. Those oils can then be used in processed foods to keep them fresh and marketable for a longer amount of time.
How It Slows Weight Loss
There are several ways in which hydrogenated oil keeps you from losing weight. One of its main dangers is that although it's artificial, in certain ways it acts the same as healthy, natural oils in the body. Although they take
up space in the body that is allocated for healthy fats, they do not do any of the same work as the good fats.
As a result, they stay in the body longer and you end up with an excess of fat in your system. That excess
fat translates to body fat that you have a hard time losing.
Your body needs a certain amount of good fat in order to go through its daily functions. These good fats are abundant in natural foods like fish, eggs and nuts, but are very scarce in processed foods. When you eat processed foods, you're taking in a huge amount of unhealthy fats that your body doesn't need and starving it of the fats it does need. You'll keep feeling hungry and continue eating until you feel full, which doesn't happen until you've had all of the good fat you need. This continuous eating can obviously lead to weight gain, especially when you're eating unhealthy, processed foods.
Another way that hydrogenated oil slows weight loss is by slowing your metabolism down. In most cases, hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oil is soybean oil. Soybean oil slows down your thyroid functions. Since your thyroid affects both your energy levels and your metabolism, you'll quickly notice that either you are losing weight very slowly or you are gaining excess weight.
Avoiding Weight Gain and Helping Weight Loss
A long-term solution to regulating your weight loss and avoiding excess weight gain is cutting out hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils from your diet. Check the label of everything you buy and strive to eat natural foods over processed foods. Cutting out hydrogenated oils from your diet will make you feel healthier, help you lose weight and save you from long-term health problems down the road.

Fructose is difficult to digest
Most people (yes, most people) get more fructose than their digestive system can absorb. Most people cannot properly digest all the fructose they get every day from an apparently normal and healthy diet. If you are eating large quantities of fruit thinking it's healthy, well think again. A normal healthy adult can properly digest 25-50 grams of fructose per day. Under Certain Circumstances Your Body Can Convert Carbs to Fructose...
Dr. Johnson’s research has revealed yet another major surprise: There are circumstances in which carbohydrates can be converted to fructose in your body even when there’s no fructose in the carbs. The underlying mechanism for this is still unclear, but he believes that insulin resistance may be one of the conditions that allows for this odd conversion to occur.
“The way I interpret this now, based upon the data we have, is that if you want to not gain weight, the most important thing is to reduce sugar/fructose intake from your diet. But if you’re really overweight, the old low-carb diet may be a good way to go because it will reduce the fructose intake, but it will also reduce carbs that may be playing a role, under certain circumstances, in making fructose in the body,” Dr. Johnson says.
“... It looks like in normal, healthy, young people [carbs and/or glucose] is not being converted to fructose. But we do have some evidence that under certain conditions – one of them would be insulin resistance, or if you’re overweight – you may be converting some of the carbs to fructose.”
Fructose Metabolizes Differently than Other Sugars
Fructose is a sugar, just like glucose. But when it’s metabolized, it’s actually very different from glucose, and this makes all the difference in the world in terms of weight and health.
While all cells use some energy in the process of metabolizing food, whether it’s fat or sugar, fructose uses up so much energy that the cell becomes energy-depleted. As a result, the cell stops functioning normally and starts to develop an inflammatory response, also known as oxidative stress.
In a nutshell, a high-fructose diet causes chronic inflammation in your body, which glucose does not do.
“We found that when the energy is depleted... the ATP levels fell (ATP is our energy source). The ATP that had been consumed broke down. Suddenly, a substance called uric acid formed. Uric acid is the substance that we know can cause gout, but it’s been long associated with obesity... It wasn’t really thought that the uric acid might have a role in obesity. This was a big challenge, because no one really wanted to believe that, but what we were able to show is that uric acid can actually stimulate fat accumulation in cells through this process of working on
the mitochondria where the ATP is made,” Dr. Richard Johnson explains.

We have all heard about the dangers of ingesting mercury. Mercury acts as a poison to your brain and nervous system. It is especially dangerous for pregnant women and small children, whose brains are still developing. Even in low doses, mercury can interfere with brain development, memory and learning ability.

Although the makers of HFCS like to claim that it‘s natural, HFCS is a highly refined product that would never exist in nature. Converting corn to HFCS is a very extensive process, and mercury is used in the production of the HFCS.
You can avoid it if you focus your diet on whole healthy, natural foods. If you do purchase any processed foods, make sure you read the label … and put it back on the shelf if it lists high-fructose corn syrup as an ingredient -- especially if it‘s the first or second highest labeled ingredient. Keep looking, food companies are starting to realize the general public‘s growing distaste for HFCS and are beginning to use Stevia instead.

Q: How does wheat make us fat, exactly?
A: It contains amylopectin A, which is more efficiently converted to blood sugar than just about any other carbohydrate, including table sugar. In fact, two slices of whole wheat bread increase blood sugar to a higher level than a candy bar does. And then, after about two hours, your blood sugar plunges and you get shaky, your brain feels foggy, you're hungry. So let's say you have an English muffin for breakfast. Two hours later you're starving, so you have a handful of crackers, and then some potato chips, and your blood sugar rises again. That cycle of highs and lows just keeps going throughout the day, so you're constantly feeling hungry and constantly eating. Dieticians have responded to this by advising that we graze throughout the day, which is just nonsense. If you eliminate wheat from your diet, you're no longer hungry between meals because you've stopped that cycle. You've cut out the appetite stimulant, and consequently you lose weight very quickly. I've seen this with thousands of patients.
Q: But I'm not overweight and I exercise regularly. So why would eating whole wheat bread
be bad for me?
A: You can trigger effects you don't perceive. Small low-density lipoprotein [LDL] particles form when you're eating lots of carbohydrates, and they are responsible for atherosclerotic plaque, which in turn triggers heart disease and stroke. So even if you're a slender, vigorous, healthy person, you're still triggering the formation of small LDL particles. And second, carbohydrates increase your blood sugars, which cause this process of glycation, that is, the glucose modification of proteins. If I glycate the proteins in my eyes, I get cataracts. If I glycate the cartilage of my knees and hips, I get arthritis. If I glycate small LDL, I'm more prone to atherosclerosis. So it's a twofold effect. And if you don't start out slender and keep eating that fair trade, organically grown whole wheat bread that sounds so healthy, you're repeatedly triggering high blood sugars and are going to wind up with more visceral fat. This isn't just what I call the wheat belly that you can see, flopping over your belt, but the fat around your internal organs. And as visceral fat accumulates, you risk responses like diabetes and heart disease.
